CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Quick updates on Brad Lidge and J.C. Romero, who continue to race against the calendar in their respective recoveries from offseason surgeries:
--Romero threw a bullpen session yesterday (30 pitches), and for the first time since his elbow surgery in October, he uncorked a few changeups. He'll throw at least that many pitches, including a few sliders, tomorrow, and after that, he's hoping to be able to face hitters in live batting practice next week. He's still shooting to be ready to rejoin the Phillies by the first homestand, which begins April 12. "I'm getting where I need to be," Romero said. "You see the smile on my face because I'm feeling good. I don't remember the last time I felt that way. Very encouraging. Even a couple of guys stood behind home plate and saw the action on my ball. They even asked me, 'Hey, you feel good?' So, that's a good sign."
--Lidge pitched another session of batting practice to reserve outfielder Chris Duffy and reported no problems with his surgically repaired right elbow or right knee. He's expected to pitch in a game Monday, likely a minor-league game or intra-squad. "Each time, I can tell my stuff might be a hair better," Lidge said. "Today, I could tell it was a decent amount better. My arm strength is coming around now. I really saw a decent jump, but I've got to maintain the focus of what I know is going to be best for me, and that's control, control, control."
(UPDATED, 4:05 p.m.): Upon further review, pitching coach Rich Dubee said Lidge will throw one more live batting practice session Monday before pitching in a game later next week. "I'd like to see him throw another BP, get more reps in," Dubee said. "He needs to get a few more looks at a hitter, throw another 20 pitches or so. He's progressing nicely."
